# Document reading

Document reading pages balance the document itself with concise metadata and acknowledgement state. Reading progress is the primary task; supporting details must remain visible without competing with the content.

## Header hierarchy

- Show the localized document title and an optional meaningful summary.
- Do not repeat the document type as a subtitle when it is already shown in Document details.
- Place language selection opposite the title when several published translations are available.
- Keep summary copy to its natural length; two or three lines are acceptable.

## Reader card

1. Put reading state, guidance, and Open PDF in a compact header above the viewer.
2. Use explicit progress copy such as `Reading progress: 3 of 8 pages`; the progress bar supplements the text.
3. When complete, state what becomes available next.
4. Keep the document viewer on a panel surface with a restrained inset boundary and independent scrolling.
5. Opening the source PDF does not bypass reading or acknowledgement rules unless the application can measure equivalent completion.

## Supporting column

- On wide screens, place Document details and Acknowledgement in a narrower adjacent column. Stack them after the reader on smaller screens.
- Two semantic sections may share one card when a stronger divider and section headings make the boundary unambiguous.
- Document details use a label-value list. Acknowledgement uses only the rows that help the user act.
- Prefer `Last` and `Next` inside the Acknowledgement section when the heading already supplies the noun.
- Do not append a timezone to every timestamp when the profile already establishes the user's display timezone. Make timezone context available in profile settings and in exceptional cross-timezone workflows.
- Place the full-width Acknowledge action after the acknowledgement rows.

## States

- Disable acknowledgement until reading requirements are satisfied and explain why in visible guidance.
- Acknowledged state shows who acknowledged, the local date/time, and the next acknowledgement only when recurrence applies.
- Missing or unavailable documents preserve metadata and provide a recoverable explanation rather than an empty viewer.
